IT trends for 2022
During the past few years, the tech sector has been growing exponentially. Starting with new apps and platforms that facilitated remote working due to the COVID-19 crisis to the evolution of AI and Mark Zuckerberg’s latest project, the metaverse, 2022 promises various innovative trends.
One of the most intriguing ideas expected to grow this year is the evolution of AI. Even though its most famous goal is to reach self-learning and self-awareness, or the development of AI-powered complex applications, experts such as Rob Toews (Forbes) state that there will be a revolution in language AI. This revolution is possible thanks to the increased development of natural language processing (NLP). NLP has received great investments and has been boosted in the past few years by a foundational new technology known as transformers, first introduced by Google researchers. We are only now getting to the point at which technology is ready to be productized and commercialized at scale. So we can expect that there will be a revolution in the AI sphere during this year.
The second trend for 2022 is the metaverse. The metaverse combines multiple technologies, including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), AI and videos. It is a place where users “live” within a digital universe. Experts esteem that people will be able to work, meet friends, buy virtual clothes and even attend concerts through this metaverse. Lately, there have been numerous investments from different tech companies such as Facebook, Microsoft and the creator of Fortnite, Epic Games, in this innovative and game-changing idea. For example, in 2014, Facebook acquired Occulus, the company producer of VR headsets, to initiate the creation of its metaverse, which Zuckerberg presented at the end of last year. While the CEO of the late Facebook, now newly called Meta, explained that it could take five to 10 years before the fundamental features of the metaverse become mainstream, and aspects of the metaverse currently exist. Super-fast broadband speeds, virtual reality headsets and, always-on online worlds are a reality, even though they may not be available to everyone. Games such as Fortnite, Roblox and Minecraft include these features and will take part in the evolution of the metaverse. Also, Nitzan Mekel-Bobrov, chief AI officer at eBay states that: “without AI, the metaverse won’t exist; AI will be both the matrix that provides the necessary structural support and the material from which digital representation will be made. Of all the ways in which AI will shape the form of the metaverse, perhaps most essential is the role it will play in the physical-digital interface.” So, the metaverse needs AI to be developed intensively to reach its desired goals and become a reality.
As the year starts, we expect to see more innovations in these areas both individually and collectively, and also hope that more tech companies will invest in them in order to make enormous advancements in these innovative and futuristic technologies. As Zuckerberg said, we will have to wait a few years before they become mainstream. When that time comes, our lives may change completely, and we may have to be ready for that crucial moment in the history of humanity and technology.
